Starting out in Advisory

My name is Callum Fahey and I graduated from the National University of Ireland, Galway, where I completed a Commerce degree and a Masters in International Finance. After moving to Dublin, I joined Grant Thornton’s Advisory department within the Business Risk Services team. Although I had no prior industry experience, the induction programme gave me confidence from the start.

Gaining project experience

My first project was a three-month Internal Audit engagement with one of the largest global asset management companies. The team welcomed me, and the training sessions were excellent. We worked with colleagues in India and the US, which gave me international exposure to leading investment banks.

Exploring different opportunities

The variety of work has been a highlight. After my first project in Asset Management, I moved into Financial Crime (Anti-Money Laundering), working on a large KYC remediation project in Luxembourg. The engagement involved PEP and sanctions checks, risk assessments and reviews of corporate entities, trusts and funds. This experience inspired me to study for the Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist exam.

Looking ahead

I’ve since joined the Restructuring & Recovery team as part of a rotation programme, which has allowed me to explore new areas and see where my skills fit best. Beyond client work, I’ve enjoyed the social side of Grant Thornton, from team events to networking opportunities. The friendly culture made starting a new role easier, and I look forward to building my career here.
