Maria specialises in external audit, assurance services and technical accounting advice to financial services companies, including banks and other credit institutions, money lenders, regulated e-money and payment institutions.
Maria has over 14 years of professional experience in audit and advisory services in the European financial sector. Prior to joining Grant Thornton, Maria worked in another professional services consultancy and was responsible for the provision of audit and advisory services to large retail and commercial banks, trading companies, stockbrokers and treasury companies.
Maria leads a wide range of engagements, including statutory audits, assurance review engagements, CASS/CAR and safeguarding audits, regulatory reviews and agreed upon procedures. She has extensive experience reviewing, testing and critically assessing systems of internal control, including under the SOX framework.
Maria is a subject matter expert on IFRS 9 and has worked on IFRS 9 implementation projects for large Irish and UK retail banks in both an assurance and advisory capacity. She advises clients on complex accounting issues, including impairment provisions, complex financial instruments, structured products, business combinations and defined benefit pension schemes.
