During my summer internship, we were given great opportunities to learn new skills. Grant Thornton places a great importance on training and development; it’s not just for graduates and seniors!
Within our different business units, we were matched with a senior member of our team who guided our technical training to ensure we got the most out of our time in Grant Thornton. I worked in the tax department so I was trained on the income tax and corporations tax systems, which the firm use. This was essential training which I used every day of my internship.
Every Thursday throughout the summer, we had “Academy Days”. The Academy is Grant Thornton’s in-house learning and development facility. All of the interns were given training sessions on different technical skills like Advanced Excel, Word and PowerPoint. These really came in handy for the rest of the summer and when I went back to college, I was able to apply these skills throughout my modules.
We also had a number of external trainers deliver training on career building areas like Personal Effectiveness and Communications. We learned how to manage our time effectively and improve our organisational skills. We also improved both verbal and written communication skills and how to articulate ourselves in a confident way.
All of the training I received during my internship was extremely useful when returning to college and since I’ve re-joined Grant Thornton as part of the grad programme I’ve been able to build on all of the skills that I learned during my summer internship.
