Social Life at Grant Thornton

If company culture is important to you, Grant Thornton will tick all your boxes—they understand the “work hard, play hard” mentality better than most.

First off, the atmosphere is a lot more open than you might expect at a large accounting firm. I’m as likely to socialise with a director or partner as with another grad, which is something I discovered in the first week when I went for after-work drinks with the partners on my team. It’s not unusual for the directors take a couple of grads out for lunch midweek.

A fun, positive culture is definitely at the forefront here. There’s always something going on to help build a sense of community, whether it’s a team dinner, a charity fundraiser or a sporting event, and because of that you end up getting to know everyone in the building—not just the people on your team or in your department.

When it comes to sport, we have two 5-a-side football leagues, a tag rugby team, a golf club, a ski club that goes on an annual spring ski trip, the 5K run series and lots more. I play tag rugby and golf and this year one of the partners encouraged me to help plan the annual golf tournament, which we’re hoping to expand to three events next year.

If sport isn’t your thing, Grant Thornton offers plenty of other social activities, from parties and cultural events to charity walks and bake-offs.

There’s a great company wellness programme here, too. Not only does the on-site gym offer free workout classes throughout the day, like yoga and spin, but our “Be Well” programme also puts on physical and mental health seminars and workshops with dieticians and doctors.

Last but not least I’ll mention our “Embrace” programme, which holds events and initiatives to celebrate all aspects of Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) within the firm.

We took part in Dublin Pride for the second year, with over 160 team members in attendance. We also successfully launched our Aspire programme – a Leadership programme for senior female’s which went on to win Gender Diversity Champion Award. These are just some small D&I successes for us as a firm!

The social scene here is second to none and there’s always an event in the calendar to look forward to and an opportunity to get to know your co-workers better.
