Applying for Grant Thornton’s grad programme most people assume you’ll just be located in Dublin. When I found out I got my place on the programme I was delighted to be offered the option to work in the Kildare office, based in Newbridge. It’s great to stay local as I live nearby and have a short commute while still getting to work for a large firm.
Working in the Kildare office, with its Tax and Audit and Assurance departments, I had the opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility quickly. I started working directly with the tax partner here quite early on, which definitely benefited me. It wasn’t long before I was liaising with clients by email and phone.
The longer I’ve been here, the more frequently I go to client sites for meetings and I’ve now gotten to a stage where I’m taking the lead on consultancy projects where I can and seeing them through to completion.
I’ve also had the opportunity to work out of the Dublin office so I have friends there who I see regularly and go out for dinner or drinks with.
It all comes down to personal preferences and priorities, but Grant Thornton’s regional offices are a great option for anyone who wants to work for a large accountancy firm but would prefer to stay closer to home.
