Focus on: the island of Ireland

Our Focus on the island of Ireland report provides a detailed analysis on business sentiment on the island of Ireland.

The report identifies that business sentiment differs across the island with Northern Ireland sentiment generally being closer to United Kingdom sentiment than Republic of Ireland.

Crucially though, accessibility to credit has the potential to create greater alignment between the ROI and NI economies with three out of four businesses on the island of Ireland expecting accessibility to credit to be the same or less in 2010 compared to 2009, compared to one in two in the United Kingdom.

Bank of Ireland, Allied Irish Bank, Ulster Bank and Northern Bank (NIB in ROI) are the main lenders in Northern Ireland. Each bank has their own challenges arising from the bursting of the property bubble in the ROI and it would appear that these difficulties are affecting NI just as much as ROI businesses.
